When I set out a college path, I really had no plan and then I met Al Bonanno who was a photo journalist at Mount Senario College. He inspired me to develop a deep love of photography. I will never forget him giving me a copy of The Family Of Man. That book became my bible and I dove into and returned to often and I still do. I thought I was going to go into photo journalism and that was going to be my thing. I spent so many hours in the dark room listening to Al talk about what a photograph needs and how to find it, how to frame it and how to get a response from an audience. All of this happened with my Pentax K-1000 and old fashion rolls of film. The experience was invaluable. The process of learning light, content, context, and development of all of those things to bring about an image the best reflects what the mind and the eye perceive is a god damn science and talent.

This is all relevant to my foundation as an artist because being able to see and relay what the mind and the eye behold is the key to any successful artist.

One day, I was approached by the ceramic professor, Viken. He said that I should take a class, so I did. Al claimed that Viken had stole his student because I was hooked on clay and changed my focus after turning down an internship with a paper in Chippewa Falls to play in the mud. I have been doing it ever since.

I graduated with a Bachelor Of Fine Arts degree and pursued a 3 year internship in Bayfield, WI with artist Bob Eckels. He taught me the finer points of functional ceramics, how a working studio operates, glaze chemistry and hard labor.

After that, I rented a studio space for a few years and fired to cone 10 in a gas kiln. I then built my own shop Washburn in 2010 and have been working in a porcelain/stoneware clay creating functional wares at cone 6.
